Reader Response the Lottery - 700 Words
Reader Response #2: The Lottery ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠is a short story written by Shirley Jackson and published in 1948. The title of the story initially leads readers to believe the story is going to be about someone winning some kind of prize. Even the opening of the story seems to protest any foul play or cruel behavior. What the reader is introduced to is a seemingly friendly gathering of a small village community, members all gathered around anxiously awaiting their drawing for the lottery. The village members all chatter amongst one another in a tone that kind neighbors would take with one another. To the surprise of the reader, the story provides a shocking twist. The story is not about someone winning a prize. Instead the story revealsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She certainly succeeded in shocking her audiences with the unforeseeable twist that arose at the end of the story. I did not expect the ending that I read. Even when I realized that the woman of the family who drew the winning ticket was arguing against the winnings, I had not ever thought that perhaps someone would die as a result. The fact that children were also allowed to participate in the drawing is what really made my stomach churn. Jackson certainly provided a detailed enough picture in such a few short pages to pull a physical reaction from me. I cannot rightfully say that the story was a good one, but it definitely was brilliant. It still amazes me that an author can write so descriptively and so intelligently that he or she can pull physical, mental, and emotional reactions from the person reading the story. In this case, I had several reactions to the story. Not only did I feel disgusted at how the community members were so eager to stone the woman to death, I also felt a mind-numbing sensation at the fact that such violence and cruelty closely mirrors our own modern society without the archaic practices. As a modern society, we cut down the individual members of society in ne w ways. While we may not string them up to hang them, we do string them up publicly for the purpose of cruelty and humiliation. The Origin Of The Word Cancer - 1549 Words
Introduction The origin of the word cancer is credited to the Greek physician Hippocrates, who is considered to be the Father of Medicine. One out of every two men and one out of every three women will be diagnosed with cancer, but despite those huge numbers most individuals does not know what that really means. Cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way and develops when the bodyââ¬â¢s normal control mechanism stops working. Cancer cells are different than normal cells in many ways that allow them to develop out of control and become invasive. Normal cells mature into distinct cell types with particular functions and cancer cells do not. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells continue to divide without stopping. Many cancers form solid tumors, which are masses of tissue. Tumors can be malignant or benign. Unlike malignant tumors, benign tumors do not invade tissues that are near. Cancerous tumors are malignant, which means these tumors invade tissues. A cancer that has spread from where it started to other places in the body is called metastatic cancer. The process is called metastasis. Treatment may help prolong the lives of some people with metastatic cancer. There are many types of cancer treatment. The types of treatment that a patient receives will depend on the type of cancer that they have and how advanced it is. The main types of treatment are surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy and bone and stem cell transplants. Segmnent (Assignment 11) Example
Essays on Segmnent (Assignment 11) Assignment Segment (Assignment 11) Find and read your firms segment information in the s to the financial ments. (Its usually one of the last notes.) What is the basis your firm has chosen upon which to report segments? Products or services 2. What are the names of your firms segments and what are the primary types of products that are sold in each? Complete the table below. Segment Name Types of Products Sold Water Fluid Solutions Well pumps, sump pumps, water softeners, pool and spa equipment Technical Products Fitting manufactured equipment 3. To determine whether management is ââ¬Ëgrowing one or more of the segments faster than the others, complete the following table by using the data provided in the notes. Divide (1) the segments total expenditures for long-term assets by (2) the segments total assets. Do this for each segment for up to three years. Segment Name Total Expenditures for long-term assets /total assets Most Recent Year Next Most Recent Year 2nd Most Recent Yr Water Fluid Solutions 49,241/ 4,778,206 = 0.10 39,631/ 4,586,313 = 0.009 36,513/ 3,911,334 = 0.009 Technical Products 15,806/ 4,778,206 = 0.003 8,336/ 4,586,313 = 0.002 15,388/ 3,911,334 = 0.004 4. Does your analysis in No. 3. indicate that management is "growing" one or more segments more rapidly than the others? Why might this be? Discuss. Based on my analysis on the growth of the different segments of the company, I am convinced that the management of Pentair, Inc is concentrating on ââ¬Ëgrowingââ¬â¢ one segment more than the other. The management of Pentair, Inc. has concentrated on growing the Water Fluid Solutions segment more than the technical products segments. This is clearly illustrated by the growth of the segment from a ratio of 0.009 to a ratio of 0.1. In comparison, the technical products segment has only managed to grow from 0.002 to 0.003 which a less significant improvement compared to the other segment. The concentration on one segment at the expense of the other may be attributed to the level of revenues recorded by the two different segments. The company finds it lucrative to concentrate more on water fluid solutions than technical products. The water fluids segment seems to be more profitable than the technical products segment. 5. Complete the table of segment information below. List the segment profit, segment assets, and return on segment assets (of each segment) for the most recent year and two prior years. List the most recent years information first. Divide column A by column B to obtain the return on segment assets. Segment Names Year A / B = Return on Segment Profit Segment Assets Segment Assets Water Fluid Solutions 2011 58,311 3,792,188 0.02 2010 231,588 3,409,556 0.07 2009 163,745 3,205,774 0.05 Technical Products 2011 185,240 651,693 0.28 2010 151,533 728,969 0.21 2009 100,355 716,092 0.14 6. Discuss the results of your segment profitability analysis and include the following. What trends do you observe? I have observed that the technical products segment has a consistent positive growth whereas the water fluids segment has a rather inconsistent growth pattern. Are some segments performing better than others? Based on the analysis provided above, the technical products segment is performing better than the water fluids segment. This is evident when we make comparisons of the two segments in terms of their return on segment. The technical products segment has a return on segment ratio of 0.28 compared to that of water fluids segment which has a ratio of 0.02. What segment-related questions would you ask of management if you had the opportunity? Why is the company neglecting a more profitable segment and concentrating on a segment that has low returns? Might overall profitability be enhanced by reallocating assets to some segments and away from others? Overall profitability may be enhanced through the reallocation of resources. For instance, in the case of Pentair, Inc. the management should consider reallocating some of the resources from the water fluids segment to the technical products segment. This is because the latter is performing better than the latter. ââ¬ËDoes management address "segment strategies" in the Management Discussion and Analysis section of the Annual Report? What do they say? Discuss and explain. The management of the company has not provided a discussion on segment strategies. 7. To understand more about how your companys segment profits are generated, compute the profit margin, asset turnover, and return on segment assets for each of your firms segments. Use the formulas from the Note above for your computations of each segments profit margin, asset turnover, and return on segment assets. Segment Name Segment Segment Return on Profit * Asset = Segment Margin Turnover Assets Water Fluid Solutions 58,311/2,369,804 = 0.02 2,369,804/3,792,188 = 0.62 0.0124 Technical Products 185,240/1,086,882 = 0.17 1,086,882/651,693 = 1.67 0.2839 8. Discuss the comparative profit margins and asset turnover that you computed for your companys segments. Do they differ markedly or they a11 about the same? If there are significant differences, is there anything about the nature of the various products in the different segments that would tend to explain the differences you found? Discuss. The two segments have a higher asset turnover than the profit margins. Additionally, the technical products segment has a higher profit margin and asset turnover than the water fluids segment. The two segments have remarkable differences and this may be attributed to the nature of the two products (Nikolai, 2009). The water fluids segment requires huge capital investment while the returns are relatively lower whereas the technical products segment requires relatively low capital investment and has higher returns. description of Dance Club Essay Example For Students
description of Dance Club Essay Young adults sometimes have a struggle to find something exciting and safe to do on the weekend. Its hard to find fun things that are not too dangerous. In the past, finding excitement has been a challenge for me, also, but in recent years I personally have found excitement in dance clubs and dance music. I find dance clubs, with large crowds of young people, usually eighteen years and older can be a place to let loose of the weekday pressures and just have fun. With the large crowds, clubs usually sell out and long lines form outside, with people waiting to get into the crazy environment of the club. Clubs usually are very well prepared for this scenario, of handling large crowds, by having an increased amount of security and enormous venues to accommodate the sell out crowds. Having such a huge amount of people waiting to get in makes security very uptight and sensitive. Guards make sure everyone is properly identified and they check every guy that gets in. This causes long lines that wrap around the club, like ants marching to their hill. One by one, guys are patted down for safety. Security makes sure no weapons or drugs are carried inside the club. As you wait outside, you hear the pulsating music of hip-hop and old rock-n-roll mixed into break beats and techno by the usually over priced D J. Everyone is so excited to get inside. Some people dance around outside like little toy robots, to the beat of the fast music. As the line continues to grow outside, you find excitement through the massive doors that everyone is waiting to walk through. Two steps inside and youre in a magical world of disco lights, laser beams, and the irreplaceable glow of black lights shinning on people. Everyone is smiling and having such a good time. You dont even realize youre packed in the club like sardines. The D J moves you in ways no one has ever done before. Mixing the loud music on the turn tables to the beat you desire to hear, the D J watches the half naked bodies of young men and women dancing around as if something has possessed their bodies. Men are wearing an under shirt, or no shirt at all, and pants. They eye the women who strut around in tank tops and tight dance pants or skirts, and who are smiling, and letting all their worries go away. The line at the bar is extremely frantic, with people getting water or their favorite alcoholic beverage. This is so important because perspiration is a major factor, and nobody wants to pass out from dehydration. As the big warehouse size fans blow as hard as they can, to cool down the sweaty bodies, you smell the musk of the guys and the sweet smell of perfume from the ladies as the cool breeze flow over the gigantic crowed on the dance floor. With the exhaustion of dancing to the frantic beat, some people choose to take a seat in the spacious, cool room furnished with large couches and chairs that are big enough for giants. Sipping cold water of alcoholic beverages, some people chat with their friends as they relax and try to catch their breath. Other people find tranquil peace by getting a massage from someone they know to help relax their tense muscles. As the walls have side shows of your favorite Disney movies or just some weird cartoons, many find peace and happiness in this way. After a long night of hearing music and watching happy people turn loose, nothing is better than knowing someday, you will do it all again. Clubs are a great way to let some craziness go and forget about the week that just went by. .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 , .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .postImageUrl , .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 , .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:hover , .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:visited , .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:active { border:0!important; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:active , .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007 .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ube2fcd153d6bc3a32c38fefac249c007:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Right to Own an Architecture Essay But, reality will strike and you must return to work or school and your regular lifes schedule. These clubs are fun, while youre young, but one day it will all end and the excitement will be left behind. A forty-hour workweek and just sitting back enjoying your time off will come too soon. Until that time, I will still plan to enjoy the excitement of the dance clubs and continue to support the over priced D J, because of my addiction to the large crowds and the free spirit it has to offer.
Rabbit Genetics Essay Example For Students
Rabbit Genetics Essay Rabbit Genetics Essay The similarity between the physiology of rabbits and humans makes the rabbit a good model for research into human disease. The most prevalent types of rabbits are cottontails and European rabbits. Domestic rabbits are tame assortments of European rabbits. The Californian, Florida White, and New Zealand White are the most common breeds used in research. Until 1912 rabbits were classified as rodents. Scientists discovered that the two types of animals differed in several distinct anatomical ways. Rabbits, for instance, have a second pair of upper incisors, known as peg teeth, that are found behind the two main visible incisors in the upper jaw. Rabbits have elongated hind legs adapted for moving at high speeds over open areas. Rabbits generally move in a hopping motion. They also have webbed toes to keep them from spreading as they hop. Rabbits have flexible necks, which allow them to turn their heads more than rodents. Their spines are long and fragile and susceptible to fractures if the animal is held improperly. Research The ability to produce tumors in rabbits makes them useful models to study chemo/immunotherapy, as well as immunoprevention of certain cancers. Cholesterol studies: Rabbits have been used to test Probucol, a drug that lowers blood cholesterol and retards the development of hardening of the arteries. Eye ear and skin studies: Rabbits are used to study middle and inner ear infections, which affect millions of infants and children each year. Rabbits are also used to study Entropion, a condition in which the eyelashes are turned inward, as well as Glaucoma, which often results in blindness. Rabbits are used in eye and skin irritation tests to develop appropriate procedures for handling certain chemicals and to predict the toxicity of accidental exposure. More than 10,000 blind or visually impaired people have benefited from corneal transplants, possible only because of hundreds of trials on rabbits. Drug metabolism: Rabbits have been used to study the effects of marijuana on the central nervous system. Pregnacy Test Presently a woman who wants to find out if shes pregnant need only make a quick trip to the local drug, grocery, or convenience store; purchase an over-the-counter home pregnancy test kit; perform a simple test; and shell know the results within a matter of minutes. Not so long ago, however, it was not nearly as quick or easy: Awomawho thought she might be with child had to schedule an appointment with her doctor, make a trip to his office, give a urine sample, go home, then spend an anxious couple of days waiting for the office to telephone with the test results. In the movies and television, a positive result was usually revealed by having a character burst into a scene and announce dramatically, The rabbit died . But why a rabbit? And why did it die if the woman was pregnant? The origins of the rabbit test lie with the discovery in the 1920s that a woman starts producing a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) shortly after a fertilized egg implants itself in the uterine wall. It was later discovered that the presence of hCG causes the placenta to produce progesterone after implantation. Production of that chemical was necessary to prevent rejection of the developing embryo. In 1927, medical researchers found that not only is hCG present in the urine of pregnant women, but that female rabbits injected with urine containing hCG would, within a few days, display distinct ovarian changes. Thus the rabbit test was born, and with it the misconception that the rabbits death was an indicator of a positive result. In those early tests, the rabbit always died, because the animal had to be killed before its ovaries could be examined. Later refinements to the test enabled researchers to inspect the ovaries without having to kill the rabbits first. .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 , .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .postImageUrl , .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 , .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:hover , .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:visited , .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:active { border:0!important; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:active , .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2 .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue7dc9212cee1815b3f35b9e92b553ec2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Technology for specialty education Essay Modern pregnancy tests are still based on measuring the amount of hCG present in urine, but they do so directly, without the need of an animal intermediary to serve as a test subject. Blood can also be tested for hCG; in fact, this type of test is more accurate and can be performed earlier in the pregnancy, but urine tests are still used in home pregnancy kits because theyre much easier .
